Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of children and adolescents. Millions of children worldwide have lost loved ones due to COVID-19, making bereavement during childhood one of the most traumatic experiences, often associated with a range of immediate and long-term risks to social, emotional, and physical well-being. This review aims to summarize current evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on grief in children. Evidence from the scientific literature indicates that the severity of grief in children is influenced by multiple risk factors, which may contribute to the development of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) among children and adolescents who have lost family members due to COVID-19.
