Abstract

Background: Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. Every minute, four males and six females need inpatient treatment due to suicide attempts. Males die from suicide at twice than female and their attempts result in death three times more often than female attempts. As per Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, there is 1 death every 11 minutes. Seventy-seven present of global suicides occur in low- and middleincome countries. Aims: To explore about Incidence, Prevalence, Method and Mode of suicide. Suicide rates were also varying in the different parts of the country. Methods: For this, literature has been looked for manually as well as through electronic resources like PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Global Health, Google Scholar, IndMED , JSTOR, and Research Gate . The abstracts of relevant papers were independently examined by author .Out of eighty one there were fifty four papers met the criteria for the analysis. Conclusion; Information about suicide in India is limited, but it is an important and growing public health problem. Towards methods of suicide, hanging and poisoning is very common in India, while in United States 55% men and 31% females were commit suicide with the guns.The incidence, prevalence, mode and method of suicide depend on the culture, economic, sociocultural belief, availabilities of materials of the particular regions and social conditions in the respective country.
